SDBA returns to the water

Dragon Boat club looking for new members, offers free sessions

The 麻豆社国产Dragon Boat Association (SDBA) is back on the water and looking for some fresh faces in 2013.

It was a strong 2012 for the SDBA's Team Chawanda, with club looking to build on that success in 2013. The all-women's team reached the competitive women's A final at last year's Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival and then placed fourth in Victoria in August.

"We're looking forward to a great year; however, we're looking for new members," team representative Cathie Greenlees wrote in an email. "We have the beginnings of a strong women's team and hope to better last year's amazing efforts that put us into the competition A division.

"We'd also like to be able to put together a mixed or men's team," she added. "We already have a few guys but need more. It takes 20 paddlers to move the boat."

Anyone who wants to try the sport out will get a chance to hit the water for free for the next three Thursdays. All the necessary equipment is provided and those interested are asked to meet in the gravel lot near the Howe Sound Brew Pub at 5:45 p.m.

The group will paddle along the Cattermole Slough. The one-hour session on the water will happen either rain or shine.
