Inside the Chieftain there are the typical sounds you hear in any bar 鈥� people chatting, drinks flowing and music playing.
But a new sound has been added to the mix 鈥� the sounds of pool balls clanging.聽
The brand new 麻豆社国产Billiards League (SBL) was formed earlier this year, and dozens of potential pool sharks now compete every week at the bar. Andrew Storie of the SBL said establishing a local billiards culture is something that鈥檚 been on his mind for years.
鈥淎 few years ago, I was shooting pool with some friends and we all thought it would be really nice if 麻豆社国产had some sort of pool league,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 finally decided to get it going this year, and it鈥檚 been a lot of fun.鈥�
Storie said the free league has 32 players signed up, and people are flocking to the tables at the Chieftain. Mondays are men鈥檚 night, Wednesdays are women鈥檚 night, Friday is a tournament and every Saturday has league action.聽
Billiards has been an interest for Storie since he was a teenager.
鈥淚 started when I was about 14 and actually played on a travel team in Ontario when I was younger,鈥� he said. 鈥淲e all grew up playing hockey and golf, and billiards is another great hand-eye coordination type of sport.鈥�
The SBL plays under Vegas rules. Storie said players of all levels are welcome.
鈥淚t鈥檚 not an intimidating room, and I鈥檓 around for coaching or for any other sort of tips with the game,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 really encourage people to take up the sport and hopefully we can revive it in Squamish.鈥�
He said working with the Chieftain has been great but thinks the SBL could expand to wherever there are tables.
鈥淥ur goal is to get everyone playing and have teams at other bars,鈥� he said, noting there are tables at the Cliffside, Shady Tree, Match and the 麻豆社国产Valley Golf Course. 鈥淲e could rotate around to other bars once a week. It鈥檒l take time but we could really get it going.鈥澛�
