Sikh Temple just keeps on rolling in the Howe Sound Men's Soccer League (HSMSL).
The team ran its unbeaten streak to five games after beating Automind 6-3 on Sunday (Oct. 16) and forward Adam Bir said it's been a smooth transition into the league for the first-year franchise.
"It's worked out pretty good for us so far," he said. "A lot of us have been playing together for most of our lives, so we came together pretty quickly."
The results on the scoreboard seem to echo Bir's thoughts. The team has yet to taste defeat and is outscoring opponents by a three-to-one ratio. Sunday's game was more of the same from the team.
"The first 15 minutes of the game we weren't really playing like we know we can," he said. "But we got better as the game went on."
Automind head coach Dave Harrison said the game was closer than the score indicated.
"I thought we were pretty good in the first half," he said. "Their two goals in the first were mistakes by us and they capitalized. It was one of our weak weeks, with a lot of players away, but they're a good team."
Harrison said the Temple's offensive prowess is what makes it a tough team to handle.
"If you make a mistake then they will punish you," he said. "They have a handful of offensive strikers and they make you pay."
Despite the loss, Harrison said he still feels good about his team.
"I think we're getting a good balance to the team when everyone's here," he said, noting that Dane Sweeney and Charlie Robson are both off to good starts.
Harrison also said he was pleased with the way the team managed to shut down one of the league's top scorers, Bruno Freitas, keeping him off the score sheet for the first time this season.
Nevin Binning picked up a hat trick for Sikh Temple, with Gurbinder Toor, Sunny Kang and Gurpreet Ria picking up singles. Charlie Ribinson replied twice for Automind, with Terry Pattersom scoring the team's other goal.
In other league action on Sunday, Khalsa defeated Galileo 8-2. Richard Collins picked up four goals on the afternoon, with Jag Sangha scoring three and Gary O'Neil adding one. Kyle Smith scored both goals for Galileo, which was playing one man down for most of the match after Adrian Oreamuno received a red card early on.
The late game saw the Ellis Moving Eagles blank Zephyr 2-0. Scoring for Ellis was Micah Cianca and Alec Macrae.
Games will continue on Sunday (Oct. 23), with Sikh Temple putting its perfect record on the line against second-place Khalsa. Other action will see Galileo take on Zephyr and Automind tangle with the Ellis Moving Eagles.
