麻豆社国产and Whistler are now locked in at one apiece in roller derby wars but the rubber match won't go down till next year.
The Sea to Sky Sirens defeated the Black Diamond Betties 146-118 at Brennan Park Arena on Saturday (July 13) to end off the season on a high note.
The low scoring bout featured a number of massive hits thanks to some loose officiating. Kristi Roxie Shocker Anderson from the Sirens said it was a physical but enjoyable bout.
It was super fun out there but pretty low scoring, she said. I think both teams were playing really smart out there.
The first half saw the Betties skate off with a 52-51 lead after a strong end of the half nine point jam from Wino Rider. The Sirens has good first half showings from Anderson (10 points) and Sweetie Gonzalez (seven points).
The Sirens took control in the second half and cruised to the win but the Betties kept it close. Top contributors for the Sirens in the second half were: Gonzalez (10 points), Pavel Fury (13 points) and Mysty Mischief (10 points).
One of the turning points in the second half was a dominant power jam from the Sirens Ilean Ufall where she picked up an impressive eight points.
Va Va Voom La Doom and Princess Slayah snagged 20 and 24 points respectively in the second half and La Doom said she was pleased with her team's performance.
We played hard but we knew it would be tough, she said. We tried to put everything into this game but we knew the Sirens would be coming.
The Betties got the best of the Sirens back in April and La Doom said things were going well in the first half.
We wanted to keep the momentum going and tried to make our offensive plays happen but it wasn't working as well, she said. The Sirens played really well but we made them work hard for it.
Sirens member Sweetie Gonzalez said it's a love/hate relationship with their rivals to the north.
It was an amazing bout we love playing Whistler, she said. Like the poster said they really are our 'frenemies'. We expect them to be hard hitters but we had an active offense out there and we stayed calm and stayed in our walls.
Gonzalez said the Sirens have been working hard in practice to avoid taking penalties and it paid off tonight. The Sirens didn't allow a single power jam in the first half and remained disciplined throughout the bout. She praised the development of the Betties.
They're a strong team and they have some superstar players over there, she said. They were all on the same page tonight and they train so hard. But it was a great way to end our season wouldn't want to end it against anyone other than the Betties.
The bout ended off a home schedule in 2013 that saw the Sirens lose 243-99 to Kamloops in May but then bounce back with a 205-188 win over the Riot Girls in June.
We set ourselves up this year to really challenge us, Anderson said. We fought so hard and I think we definitely stepped it up after losing to Kamloops.
Both Sirens and Betties players said the rivalry between the teams is nice to have and the two squads are sure to lock horns again in 2014.
The next big event for the Sirens is a Fresh Meat recruitment drive taking place on Tuesday (July 16). Anderson and Gonzalez said it's important for the Sirens to pick up some new local talent.
It's open to guys and girls and all shapes and sizes, Anderson said.
This is a call out for moms, students everyone is welcome, Gonzalez added.
The event takes place at Brennan Park Arena on Tuesday from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Those interested need to bring a helmet and identification, all other equipment is provided by the team.
