Sirens seek fresh meat

Recruitment drive inviting new players to try out derby

Ever wanted to suit up for the Sea to Sky Sirens?

The latest Fresh Meat recruitment drive on July 16 can give anyone over the age of 18 that opportunity.

Kristi "Roxie Shocker" Anderson said the team hopes to attract new talent by staging the recruitment event just days after the Sirens final bout on Saturday (July 13).

"We've done it at Totem Hall in the past but we wanted to have it so roller derby is still fresh in everyone's mind," she said. "We get a lot of chicks who tell us they want to join and then forget about it if it's a month and a half later like we've done before."

Anderson said roller derby has become a big part of her life since she first joined the team and she still loves competing.

"If you want to meet friends and have a good workout at the same time roller derby is perfect," she said. "We're not forcing you to hit people and we need more people to join the team."

She said the Sirens had over 25 players a few years ago but numbers have been dwindling recently and the team needs new talent to shine.

"All the Sirens will be there to help you out and answer any questions you have," she said. "All you need to bring is a helmet and identification to prove you're at least 18."

The Fresh Meat event takes place from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Brennan Park Arena on July 16. All equipment is provided and those who are chosen to continue will qualify for the Fresh Meat 14-week program starting in September. The derby season starts in the spring, with practices weekly and bouts several times a month.
