Sirens welcome Riot Girls

Roller derby team hosting second home bout of 2013

The Sea to Sky Sirens look to get back on the winning track when they entertain Vancouver's Terminal City Riot Girls on Saturday (June 15).

It's the second home bout of the year for the Sirens, who opened their 2013 Brennan Park Arena run with a 243-99 loss to the Tournament City Deadlies on May 25.

The Riot Girls are part of the Terminal City Rollergirls (TCRG) league based in Vancouver. The TCRG was Vancouver's first female roller derby league, having been established in 2006.

The TCRG is made up of four different teams (Riot Girls, Public Frenemy, Bad Reputations and Faster Pussycats) and also a traveling all-star team.

According to Kristi "Roxie Shocker" Anderson, it should be a tough test for the Sirens.

"They're a pretty established team and it's going to be a challenge for us," she said.

Anderson said the Sirens are still dealing with a number of injuries and the status of star players Shannon "Mala Justed" Handley and Genevieve "Honey Badger" Medrano are still up in the air.

"We're nursing a lot of injuries as a team right now but I think we can pull through," she said. "I don't think any of us thought Kamloops [Tournament City Deadlies] would hit as hard as they did. They were a really tough team."

The Sirens are partnering up with the Test of Metal for the event, as well as the after-party at the Howe Sound Brew Pub. Anderson said the club is hoping for a better tournout than the bout in May.

Tickets are available in advance for $10 at Agnes Jean Boutique and the Naked Lunch. They're also available at the door for $15. All children eight and under are free.

The doors open for the event at 6:30 p.m. and the bout gets underway at 7:30 p.m. For more information on the team, visit www.squamishrollerderby.ca.
