It came down to the wire, but Fraser Valley-based Smack It Pitch hung on to capture the A division title at the 麻豆社国产Slo-Pitch Association鈥檚 (SSPA) annual May long weekend tournament.

Buoyed by a five-run fourth inning, Smack It Pitch had a six-run lead on 陆 Fest heading into the seventh and final inning during the A division title game on Monday (May 19).

But that lead quickly disappeared after 陆 Fest loaded the bases, had a run walked in and then connected on a grand slam to pull within one. That鈥檚 as close as they would get, however, as the man on the mound for Smack It Pitch shut down the offence and helped his team hang on for the 16-15 win.

It was the first time in several years that a Squamish-based team didn鈥檛 make the final. The highest ranked local team in the A division was Club 55, which was made up of members of the Howe Sound Cannons.

Local teams weren鈥檛 shut out of the B division, as the Excons captured that title by defeating DIK. The Excons continued their run of successful showings at the May long weekend tournament, as the previous two years they won the A division title.

The C division featured Gooch beating the Squamish-based Gringos in the final. The Trolls, another 麻豆社国产team, placed third. Meanwhile, in the D division it was an all-麻豆社国产battle as the Hooligans defeated the Gunshow to take home the top prize.

A total of 40 teams from all over the Sea to Sky Corridor and the Lower Mainland took to the field during the long weekend. The event saw round-robin games occurring on Saturday and Sunday and playoff action going down on Monday.听

Spring league regular season action continues for the SSPA and the next big tournament for the group is the Spring league wrap up on July 12 and 13. For info on the SSPA, visit www.squamish-slopitch.com.
