Kris Sneddon claimed his second solo victory in the BC Bike Race on Saturday (July 5), crossing the line in fourth place for the final stage finish at Whistler Olympic Plaza with a cumulative time of 15:13:54.
It was a victory Sneddon attributed to the strong support from his Kona teammates.
鈥淚 wouldn鈥檛 have been able to do it without them,鈥� said Sneddon, shortly after crossing the finish line.
鈥淏arry (Wicks) saved me when I flatted one day, he gave me his wheel and kept me in the race pretty much.鈥�
Fellow Kona rider Spencer Paxson rode into second place overall again this year, two minutes and 38 seconds behind Sneddon after the final stage. Sneddon had a lead of two minutes 40 seconds at the end of Day 6, enough to maintain his lead on the short but tiring final day in Whistler.
鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely a comfortable margin, but if you flat it might take you that long to fix it,鈥� said Sneddon.
鈥淟ast year was a bit more of a battle between me and Neal (Kindree), this one was sort of a battle between me and Spence (Paxson), but it鈥檚 not quite the same because we鈥檙e teammates.鈥�
Neal Kindree pulled out of the BC Bike Race on Day 3 last year due to a stomach bug and did not race the 2014 BC Bike Race.
For the solo women, Vermont rider Lea Davison managed to edge out last year鈥檚 victor Wendy Simms with a cumulative time of 18:27:48, just under two minutes ahead of Simms.
鈥淚t came right down to the wire,鈥� said Davison, who is making a comeback from hip surgery she had last January.
鈥淲endy is so strong and this is her backyard, it was all who had the better day. If today had been any longer, I鈥檇 have been in trouble.鈥�
Greg Day once again claimed top spot in the Team of 2 open men category, racing with fellow 麻豆社国产rider and new recruit to the Rocky Mountain team, Quinn Moberg. It was Day鈥檚 sixth BC Bike Race and Moberg鈥檚 first, the teammates managing to accumulate a one hour 50 minute lead by the time they crossed the line in Olympic Plaza.
鈥淵esterday we dug in really hard because we wanted to get a full stage win,鈥� said Day.
鈥淲e were both pretty tired today because of it, but we鈥檙e just happy to come through. It鈥檚 been an awesome week.鈥�
Added Moberg: 鈥淕reg is really experienced in this event, he knew when to hit it and when to hold back, when to stay calm and when to get excited. I couldn鈥檛 have asked for a better (teammate).鈥�
Graeme Fitch once again raced with Harbour Air teammate Greg McDougall in the Team of 2 Veteran category, celebrating his eight BC Bike Race finish.
鈥淚t was good week, no major crashes and just enough blood to show off,鈥� said Fitch.
鈥淚t鈥檚 nice to finish up here in our backyard.鈥�
