For three quarters, the Howe Sound Sounders senior boys basketball team went toe to toe with the Collingwood Cavaliers on Thursday (Jan. 30), but it quickly fell apart in the deciding frame.
The Sounders led after the second and third quarters but were outscored 29-13 in the fourth to lose 75-59. Head coach Max Roy said the team looked as good as they've looked all year in those first three quarters.
"I thought it went really well for us but we just ran out of steam and got into foul trouble," he said. "We lost it in the fourth quarter. They went on a bit of a run and we panicked and started to take bad shots and that compounded their run."
Roy pointed out that Collingwood crushed Seycove - a team that also defeated the Sounders - by 60 points and was happy with his team's effort against the talented team from West Vancouver.
He said the Sounders are coming together but still need to work on their offensive game.
"Ball movement between our players and just moving off the ball are two areas we could improve in," he said.
Roy said the team got contributions from everyone but praised the play of Randeep Grewal, who led the team with 27 points and nine rebounds and Gurjot Gill, who made several outside shoots to spread the Cavs' defence out.
The senior boys team hit the road again on Tuesday (Feb. 4) when they travelled to North Vancouver to battle the Bodwell Bruins. Check next week's edition of The Chief for details from that game.
