It may have taken a while, but things are finally coming together for the Howe Sound Sounders football team.
One week after a narrow 18-12 loss to the Eric Hamber Griffins, the Sounders got one in the win column by defeating the Timberline Timberwolves 36-6 at Howe Sound field on Saturday (Oct. 25).
Howe Sound鈥檚 Rolan Mendoza, playing quarterback on offense and free safety on defense, sparked the Sounders on both sides of the ball.
He led the way with 139 yards rushing on nine carries, threw for 107 yards and two touchdowns and also scored two rushing touchdowns in the win.
鈥淩olan had a great game and not because of the numbers he racked up but because of the decisions he made on the field,鈥 said Sounders coach Jim Errington in an email.
Errington said the defense was strong, only allowing 69 yards of total offense but he said the offensive line and blocking helped win the game.
鈥淭his game was won on the blocking of our O-line and backs,鈥 he said.聽 鈥淚f we continue to block like we did and not turnover the ball I don't see us losing another game. Most people just saw the ball advancing down the field but what they should have saw was how much time our QB had to throw or run and how our offensive line physically moved the Wolves defense back, or how they consistently opened holes, especially #66 Brandon Nguyen, allowing our blocking backs to pick up linebackers giving us a 10 yard per play average.鈥
Also scoring touchdowns were Scott Messier (two) and Josh Edmunds. Mendoza made three of five two point converts.
Luke Underwood led the way defensively with six tackles, while Jake Bouchard and John Ruhland picked up four tackles apiece. Calvin Elliot had the team鈥檚 lone sack, with Jonathan Hamill blocking a punt.
Another impressive stat for the Sounders was zero turnovers, the first time this season that they have failed to turn the ball over.
Howe Sound improves to one win and two losses on the season and all they have to do is win their final game to clinch a spot in the playoffs. That game occurs on Saturday (Nov. 1) when Eric Hamber comes to Squamish. Kick off for the game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
