Sounders devour Eagles for lunch

Howe Sound junior boys pick up win, look ahead to tournament

The Howe Sound Sounders junior boys basketball team skipped lunch and instead feasted on Chatelech Secondary with a 28-15 win on Tuesday (Feb. 19).

The visiting Chatelech Eagles stopped at Howe Sound Secondary School (HSSS) en route to Pemberton and took on the Sounders. Chatelech started the game on a 6-0 run but Howe Sound recaptured the lead at the end of the first half and cruised to the win.

"We started out slow," said Sounders head coach Max Roy. "The boys were nervous because we had a lot of fans there, but after they collected their nerves we started to make better decisions and play better."

Kulraj Bhandral led the way for the Sounders with 10 points and said it was nice to get the win.

"It was an OK performance from the team," he said. "We should have done way better but we got the win. Karandeep's [Sidhu] shot [last second buzzer beater] was awesome and a perfect way to end the game. It was also amazing to see all the people watching us. It was great."

Ollie Rizun, who scored eight points, noted the team picked up its play in the second half.

"It was close in the first half but we pulled up in the second," he said. "Sechelt has a good team. We played them at the beginning of the year and beat them so it was nice to play them again."

Coach Roy said the game against Chatelech was a good primer for the upcoming Sea to Sky Tournament, which the Sounders are hosting starting on March 1.

"We are working hard because our goal is to win the tournament on March 1," he said.
