It was a fruitless trip up north for the Howe Sound Sounders senior boys basketball team.
The Sounders took on the arch-rival Pemberton Secondary School Red Devils but fell 66-55 in Pemberton on Thursday (Jan. 9).
Howe Sound struggled early, scoring only 20 points in the first half. Head coach Max Roy said they improved in the second half but it was too much ground to make up.
"It was a hard-fought game," Roy said in an email. "We got down early and had to fight our way back into it. PSS plays hard and they played quite well that night."
Roy pointed out that the team is looking forward to gaining some revenge on the Red Devils during the Sea to Sky Championships later this year. He said it should be competitive event as the two teams have split the season series so far with one win apiece.
It was a different story for the Howe Sound Sounders junior boys team, which overcame an 11-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter to defeat Pemberton 51-40.
Roy, who also coaches the junior boys team, said there were a number of standouts in Thursday's win.
"Nav Tatla had a great fourth quarter, allowing us to come back," he said, adding Howe Sound only allowed four points in the final quarter. "Connor Dawson made good decisions down the stretch and Charlie Rukus was our defensive standout of the game."
The Howe Sound Sounders senior girls team also battled PSS and took care of business at home on Jan. 8.
The Sounders defeated the Red Devils 37-30. Howe Sound's Emily Cadman came up with some clutch late baskets to secure the win.
The junior boys team returned to action on Wednesday (Jan. 15) taking on Whistler and the senior boys tip-off tonight in Gibsons against Elphinstone Secondary.
