The Howe Sound Sounders senior girls basketball team picked up yet another win, defeating Whistler Secondary 40-6 on Thursday (Feb. 7) at the Howe Sound gym.
Howe Sound had offensive contributions from Rryla McIntosh, Natalie Fincham and Amrit Dhinsa in the first half and jumped out to a 12-2 lead at halftime.
The Sounders skyrocketed during the third and fourth period with Karmen Mooney, Teaghen Healey and Celine Scholz contributing to build to the 40-6 final. Howe Sound's defence proved to be stellar.
"They played very well," said Sounders head coach Daryl McCullough. "We have a great amount of talent with some real stars. There are also some exchange students where this is their ?rst time playing basketball and they are having a lot of fun."
McIntosh said it was a nice win for the girls in their first home game of 2013.
"It was a fun game even though it started off slow," she said. "We could have got more aggressive on defense, but overall the team worked hard and I'm proud of my girls."
Sounders player Nami Asoda agreed, but noted the improved play of Whistler.
"It was a good, fun game, better than last time," she said. "But Whistler is getting harder and more competitive."
The Sounders junior girls team was also in action on Thursday and picked up a 24-10 win over Whistler. The Sounders were led by Sasha Eidsvyk, who had a team-high 14 points and Emily Cadman, who scored six and had a strong game on the boards.
McCullough, who also coaches the junior team, was impressed by the effort of his team.
"With only five girls dressed we were forced to play ironman - or woman, that is," he said in an email. "The junior girls have been a dedicated and fun bunch."
