Sounders miss the boat

Team loses 27-6 to Belmont on Vancouver Island, missing two ferries along the way

The Howe Sound Sounders football team experienced a frustrating travel day to Vancouver Island Friday (Oct. 8), which contributed to the team's poor showing of a 27-6 loss to Belmont in an exhibition game.

"The whole day was a disaster," said team communications manager Janice MacLean.

"Our bus missed the Horseshoe Bay ferry and then went to the Tsawwassen terminal to catch the next one but missed that also."

The team remained in Tsawwassen, taking the next available ferry, but ended up almost two hours late for kick-off.

"I really felt bad for the poor players," MacLean said. "It wasn't a fun day and the team was exhausted by the time we got there."

Overall, MacLean said it was a positive experience when they hit the field, noting that it was good to have the boys test themselves against one of the top teams in Tier 2.

The club also announced the release of a brand new line of apparel that fans, parents and team members will be able to purchase online.

According to MacLean, it's the same company that designed the Sounders new jerseys and she said the feedback from those who have seen the products has been positive.

"The kids have all seen the gear and they seem to like it," she said. "The products we have online right now are only available until Oct. 24 and then there will be a whole brand new set of apparel."

A portion of the clothing sales goes to the team with a selection of pullover hoodies, T-shirts, golf shirts and shorts.

Those interested can visit the website at www.northernathletic.ca, then click on the green "order my gear" icon and scroll down to the Howe Sound Sounders page. The sales code is KJ7YK.

Next up for the team will be a game against Frank Hurt on Saturday (Oct. 16). Kick off is at 1 p.m. at Howe Sound field.
