The Howe Sound Sounders junior boys basketball team kicked off the New Year right against the Pemberton Red Devils on Thursday (Jan. 8).
Howe Sound posted a big 59-20 win at home, the first win in the 2014-15 season for the club. Head coach Max Roy said he was pleased with his team鈥檚 play.
鈥淚t was a good win for us and we really rebounded better today,鈥 he said. 鈥淥ur defence looked a lot better, and the reason we held them to 20 points was we forced them to settle for outside shots and gave up very little inside. Hopefully we can bring that to our other games and force teams to beat us with outside shooting.鈥
The twin brother duo of Dylan and Bryce Northey led the way for the Sounders, with Bryce scoring 19 and Dylan adding 10. Nikki Tehara added seven points in the win.
The junior boys are competing in both the North Shore League (NSL) and the Sea to Sky League (STSL) for 2014-15 and it was the first win for Howe Sound in any league game.
Roy said the team has lost several close games in the NSL, including a one-point heartbreaker in Collingwood earlier this season. The junior boys now have an overall record of one win and five losses in league games in 2014-15.
He said defensive play is key if the Sounders want to pick up more wins.
鈥淲e need to fully commit to defense for the entire 32 minutes to win,鈥 he said.
Next up for the team was an away game against the Sentinel Secondary School Spartans on Jan. 14. The next home game for the junior boys occurs on Jan. 14 when the West Vancouver Secondary School Highlanders come to town.
