The Howe Sound Sounders senior boys basketball team is locked into the sixth seed for the AA Howe Sound Zone tournament starting on Thursday (Feb. 13) and they'll be battling a familiar foe in the opening game.
Howe Sound takes on the third-seeded Bodwell Bruins to kick off the tournament. Bodwell defeated the Sounders 74-48 on Feb. 4.
Sounders head coach Max Roy said it was the second half that again killed Howe Sound's chance to win.
"At halftime we were right in the game but we lost steam in the second half of the game," he said.
Despite the loss, Roy said he's confident in his team's chances when they take on Bodwell again.
"We strongly believe that we can give Bodwell a run for their money as the boys realize that we can compete with this team," he said.
The team's confidence likely increased after posting an 80-60 win over Chatelech Secondary on Feb. 5. The Sounders were led by Randeep Grewal, who scored 46 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Xeyus Arellano also had a big game with 11 assists.
"The boys and I had a lot of fun heading over to the Sunshine Coast," Roy said. "Everyone played well."
Tournament action gets underway on Thursday at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary in North Vancouver. Tip-off for the game is 6:30 p.m.
The tournament is played under single-game knockout rules, with the zone champion being crowned on Feb. 20 and the top two teams advancing to the B.C. AA Championships in March.
