Sounders set to open season

After an undefeated preseason, the Howe Sound Sounders football team will kick off their regular season when they host the Robert Bateman Secondary Timberwolves this Saturday (Sept. 25) at Howe Sound Secondary field.

The Sounders recently finished off their two game exhibition schedule with a 20-14 win over Prince George's Duchess Park Secondary in Richmond last Saturday (Sept. 18). In their other pre-season game, they defeated Vancouver Island's Isfeld Ice 14-3.

Last year saw the team post a 6-0 record during the regular season and there are high hopes for the team for this season. New athletic director and vice-principal Ryan Massey wants to see the community get behind the team.

"We'd really like to get back the community support we used to have," he said, mentioning that Sounders game used to draw people from all over the community and not just students or family members of the players.

Massey said he was pleased with the strong fan support during the Friday, Sept. 10 home pre-season game against the Ice but he noted that it was a Friday afternoon right after school. He hopes to see the same crowd on the Saturday (Sept. 25) game against Bateman.

According to Massey, Bateman is expected to be a strong team and it should be a test for the Sounders in their opening game of the season.

Kick-off for the game is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 25) at Howe Sound Secondary Field.
