Some late heroics helped the Howe Sound Sounders football team pull off an impressive comeback over Robert Bateman Secondary, snapping the team's two game winning streak and keeping them in the playoff hunt.
The Sounders escaped Abbotsford with a narrow 30-29 victory on Saturday (Oct. 30) but it certainly wasn't easy.
The team started off poorly as the Timberwolves connected with a long bomb on the first play of the game to take an early lead. On the next possession, the Sounders threw an interception and were scored on shortly thereafter. Howe Sound fell behind by two scores early on and it looked like it might be a long afternoon for the Sounders.
Bateman added another touchdown just before the end of the first quarter to go up 22-0 after the first. The second quarter saw things improve marginally for the Sounders, as they got on the board but Bateman answered back and the first half concluded with Howe Sound trailing 29-8.
The Sounders came out much better in the second half as they closed the gap to 15 points in the third quarter and then scored two touchdowns in the final 3:40 to win the game by one point. The winning play came when Ryan Marquette rumbled in for a two-point convert to put Howe Sound up with 1:42 remaining. The defence managed to hold off Bateman on their final possession to ensure the victory by a score of 30-20.
Scoring touchdowns for the Sounders were Cory Constantin, Ryan Marquette, Anthony Wuster and Nolan Prevost. Constantin put together another strong game, rushing for 209 yards on 29 carries. Kenny Gore was a threat in the air for Howe Sound, catching two passes for 35 yards.
Constanin was also strong on the defensive side of the ball, leading the team in tackles with six. Prevost added five while Wuster along with Jordan Gustelli had three. The team's lone sack came from defensive tackle Joshua Watts.
The win puts the Sounders at 3-2 on the season and the team is currently in a logjam atop the Western Conference. They will take on Frank Hurt in their next game on Saturday (Nov. 6), which will have enormous playoff consequences. If the Sounders win, they will qualify for the playoffs but if they lose, they need Bateman to beat Moscrop in order to advance to the postseason.
The Sounders take on Frank Hurt in Surrey on Saturday (Nov. 6), kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
