A wet and soggy Saturday (Nov. 3) turned into an afternoon to forget for the Howe Sound Sounders football club.
The damp conditions apparently did something to the Sounders' ability to hold onto the ball, as the team fumbled a staggering seven times en route to a 38-22 setback to the G.P. Vanier Towhees.
Howe Sound's first two possessions ended with fumbles, with the Towhees taking full advantage and building to a 26-6 lead after the first half. But it was the rushing game and particularly Vanier running back Cody Fletcher who helped victimize Howe Sound for 294 yards on the ground.
Howe Sound outplayed Vanier in the second half, outscoring them 16-12, but it wasn't enough and the Sounders dropped to three wins and three losses this season.
Roland Mendoza ran in two touchdowns for the Sounders, with Mendoza connecting with wide receiver Norbi Richter for the team's other major. Howe Sound managed to maintain a somewhat balanced offence with 168 yards on the ground and 55 yards passing on the afternoon.
Swo-wo Gabriel led the way offensively with 98 yards rushing on 21 carries, while Josh Watts added 36 yards on eight attempts. Richter continued to be the team's top receiver and the favourite target for Mendoza, as he grabbed three passes for 44 yards.
Watts picked up six tackles to lead Howe Sound, with Gabriel, Cam Dare and Mitch Alford grabbing three apiece. Kelvin Gloor added an interception and also picked up a fumble for the Sounders two positive turnovers.
