It took penalty kicks, but Squamish鈥檚 U13 boys select team beat rivals from North Vancouver on Saturday.

The two top-placed soccer teams battled hard in a defensive game. 麻豆社国产seemed to gain some momentum as the second half wore on, with a couple of great chances to finish off the game in regulation, but had to go to penalty kicks to seal the victory.听

Tyler Blasak and Marcus Hernandez played outstandingly, as did the rest of the players who had to really dig deep for the win, said coach Marco Fanzone.

U15 girls North Shore champs

麻豆社国产United U15 girls select soccer team won the North Shore District Championship, beating NSG Pegasus 1-0 at Sutherland Field in North Vancouver on Feb. 21. The team will now represent for the North Shore in the round of 16 for the Provincial Cup.听

The round of 16 starts on the weekend of April 1 to 3, with quarterfinals set for April 8 to 10, semi-finals on April 15 to17, and finals on April 30 to May 2 in Aldergrove. Teams will compete for berths in the provincials in Penticton between July 6 and 10. 听

HSS hoops alumni tourney

Howe Sound Secondary is hosting a four-team alumni tourney featuring the senior boys from HSS and a team of alumni from Elphinstone, along with two teams from the school鈥檚 alumni.

One team will be made up of graduates between 2010 and 2015, with the other from before 2010.听

The tourney will be a round robin, and each team will play three games. Action starts at noon on Saturday and continues through Sunday, with the feature match-up of our alumni teams starting at 4:30 p.m.
The event is a fundraiser to support travel teams that represent 麻豆社国产in the North Shore league.
There will be a concession, and admission is by donation. As well, there is admission by donation of canned goods or non-perishable food for the local food bank.

Quest ends season

Both the men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 Kermodes finished out the regular season with home wins against Langara on Friday.

The men鈥檚 team won easily 93-74, with Theo VandenEkart and Mike West leading the way, with 23 and 20 points respectively.

The Kermodes finish the year in second place with 18 wins and three losses.

The women鈥檚 game was closer, as Miriam Baumann, in her final home game, scored 22 points and Jordin Wilkinson added 16 to lead the Kermodes to a 57-54 win.

The team finished in fourth place with an 11-10 record.

As well, VandenEkart from the men鈥檚 team was named male basketball athlete for week 11 for his play over two games the previous week.

Both the men and the women鈥檚 team will be playing in the league championship tourney at Capilano University starting today (March 3).听

Hockey teams miss playoffs

After a strong season, the bantam reps went into the weekend in the tier three final four in Chilliwack over the weekend with the aim of securing one of the two berths available for the provincials.

They lost their first game to Arbutus 5-0 but rebounded against Langley in game two with a 9-2 victory. They fell short with a 4-3 loss to North Shore Winter Club on Sunday, as North Shore and Arbutus wrapped up the two provincial spots.

As well, the pee wee rep team pushed the top-ranked team in their tier, North Shore Winter Club, to the brink in a three-game series last week in the hope of keeping their post-season alive. They lost the first game in the series but came back in the second game to win 3-0 and force the decisive game. They came from a 2-0 deficit to score three unanswered before North Shore rallied in the end, scoring the winner with 2:34 left.

Despite the loss, the 麻豆社国产team racked up an impressive record this season of 37 wins, four losses and three ties.

Skiers make their mark

On Saturday at the Whistler Olympic Park, more than 420 cross-country racers skied the 15-kilometre, 30-kilometre and 50-kilometre courses at the annual Sigge鈥檚 Payak. Sea to Sky Nordics racers Sofie Hill (11) and Marin Lowe (10) skied a fantastic pace to win the girls 15-kilometre for the 13-15 youth category. Their time was a blazing 1:13:05.71 and 1:13:06.2, respectively, in challenging conditions.

There were many more strong 麻豆社国产results including: Raphael Gasc (1:07:22.1) and Sean Benson (1:16:05.6) in the boys 15 km (13-15). Anik Watson finished eighth in women鈥檚 30 km at 2:06:37.6.
Heather Campbell was third place in female 15 km with 1:00:20.
Anne Clifford came in 25th with a time of 1:12:19.9 in the female 15 km.
Claudia Viviani was 29th with a time of 1:13:09.4 in female 15 km.

Sheryl Yeager, event spokesperson, said there was some confusion over the course, which meant the disqualification of a couple of the event leaders who had missed a section of their second lap. She added that the errors were not intentional and the mistakes provided a learning experience for all involved.
