Spring is just around the corner and the 麻豆社国产Paddling Club (SPC) is getting ready to hit the water by offering several courses in anticipation of the 2011 season.
"Kids in Kayaks" is a pair of sessions designed to introduce nine- to 16-year-olds to the sport. Paddlers will practice at the Brennan Park pool under the watchful eyes of Paddle Canada instructors as well as pool staff. Through a variety of games and activities, paddlers will become more familiar with the sport and the sessions could be used as a refresher course or as a good platform for beginners to move onto the weekly paddles in the summer.
The two Kids in Kayaks sessions take place on Feb. 19 and 26 from 8 to 9:30 p.m. The cost to participate is $25 plus a $5 insurance fee for non-members of Canoe Kayak B.C.
The SPC is also offering an "Intro to Paddling" course on Saturdays at Brennan Park pool, starting on March 5. In four sessions, those attending will learn basic paddling strokes and take part in controlled capsize drills in the water to help gain confidence. The classes will take place from 8 to 9:30 p.m. and costs $100 to register. Participants must also be members of the SPC to join the class and memberships will be available on the first night of classes.
The club is also offering drop-in kayaking sessions at the same time as the Intro to Paddling course. Those interested must be SPC members and participants are invited to bring their own boat or use one provided by the club.
Membership in the SPC costs $30 for adults, $15 for youths or $75 for families. For more information on the club, visit www.squamishpaddlingclub.com.
