麻豆社国产runners fare well at provincials

Handful of local cross country athletes compete against B.C.'s best

麻豆社国产cross country athletes left their mark in Aldergrove at the BC High School Cross Country Provincials on Saturday (Nov. 2).

The top local finisher was Howe Sound Secondary School (HSSS) student Sarah Bowers. The Grade 11 student completed the 4.3-kilometre course in 18:28.32 and finished 64th in a field of 232 runners from across B.C.

The only other HSSS student to qualify for provincials was Grade 10 student Dominic Wade. He placed 186th in a field of 242 runners, many of which were Grade 11 and 12 athletes.

HSSS cross country coach Max Roy said he was pleased with the duo's results.

"Heather [Gordon, co-coach] and I are super proud of these two," he told The Chief. "It is amazing how well both of them did as they do not specifically train for running. Dominic is a soccer player and Sarah is a dancer, both of them using running as cross training for their sport."

Roy said he and Gordon are looking forward to seeing what Bowers and Wade will do next year with more experience under their belts.

But it wasn't just HSSS students that made the trip to Aldergrove, as a number of Don Ross Secondary School (DRSS) runners also competed in the Junior Boys and Girls divisions.

Luke Parry had the top time among DRSS runners, completing the 4.3 km course in 17:43.91 and placing 108th in his division. Other DRSS Junior Boys runners included: Parker Mells (171st), Graeme Bowers (185th) and Wayne Yang (188th).

A pair of DRSS girls also competed, with Kyley Rosser placing 124th and Mikayla Lorimer finishing 186th.
