麻豆社国产teams excel at Soccerfest

32nd annual tournament sees three local teams take home hardware

It's been a good month for the Squamish-based Khalsa soccer club.

The team won the Howe Sound Men's Soccer League (HSMSL) championship on April 14 and captured the Soccerfest men's open championship on Sunday (April 22).

Playing under the name B and B Excavating for the 32nd annual tournament, the squad took home the championship after beating the Socceroos 2-1 to conclude the Soccerfest tournament at Brennan Park. They fell behind 1-0 in the first half but battled back, with Jag Sangha scoring a pair of goals to lead them to victory.

"It's good to finally win Soccerfest," he said, noting that an incarnation of the team finished second last year. "We knew it was going to be hard and I know my legs were pretty tired from the earlier game."

The club qualified for the final after beating Blacks United 2-1 earlier on Sunday after winning twice and losing once on Saturday (April 21). Sangha scored on a penalty kick to even the score and then fooled the opposing keeper on a spectacular set-up on the winning goal.

"Jeremy [Galley, goalkeeper] kicked the ball out and Russell [Adams] was onside and found me on the right hand side," he said. "After the first half we knew we had to keep our composure and keep the ball more on the ground. We needed better passing and movement and it feels very nice that we were able to do that and win."

Head coach Ninder Bir said it was a team effort.

"Overall we got better as the tournament went on," he said. "After the first half I told the guys we need to break them down offensively with better passing and running and it worked. This is such a hard tournament to win and it's nice for a 麻豆社国产team to win it."

Quest University won the women's title, as they easily took care of the Benchwarmers 3-0 in the final on Sunday. It was the final time for Quest graduating students Baylee Wilkinson, Brittany Shalagan, Samadi Bouchard, Shannon Nordling and Lindsay Epp to don the Kermodes jersey and they went out on top.

B and B Excavating wasn't the only 麻豆社国产team to take home top prize, as Corona won the men's over-30 championship by defeating Norvan 4-0 on Sunday. Other group winners included The Gibsons Coasters (men's over-40), The Surrey Outlaws (ladies open recreational) and the Buckin' Lomas (ladies over-30 recreational).

The end of the tournament saw the winning teams being awarded their respective trophies by the Soccerfest executive committee, including the naming of Fred Hildreth as the winner of the Bobby Mahnger Most Outstanding Official award.
