麻豆社国产teams fare well in Chilliwack

Storm second, United and Y2K'Z third at preseason tourney

Squamish's U12 and U13 boys and girls travel soccer teams fared well at a preseason youth tournament in Chilliwack on the weekend.

The U13 麻豆社国产Storm girls team finished second out of four teams in the two-day tournament, reaching the championship game before falling 2-0 to the Chilliwack Attack. The Storm, coached by Brent Williston, didn't score in two games against the Attack -the local also lost 2-0 to the same team to open the tournament.

After the opening-game loss, the Storm defeated the Golden Ears Rockets 2-1 on goals by Kei Gray and Cameron Larson, then shut out the Williams Lake Storm 3-0, with goals from Larson, Kyley Rosser and Jasleen Sekhon. Goalkeeper Madi Doyle recorded the shutout.

Squamish's newest travel teams, the 麻豆社国产United U12 girls team and the 麻豆社国产Y2K'Z U12 boys team, both finished third in their respective six-team divisions.

United, coached by Marco Fanzone, beat Powell River 3-1 in the opener thanks to a pair of goals by Madison Cartwright and one by Lindsay Larson. The 麻豆社国产team then ran up against a fresh Surrey United Revolution team. Playing its first game of the tournament, Surrey dominated play and won 2-0 despite a strong defensive effort from the 麻豆社国产girls. One of the Surrey goals was disputed as some players said it went through the side netting.

Host Chilliwack defeated 麻豆社国产5-0 in the Sunday morning matchup. In the game for third and fourth, 麻豆社国产United came from behind against Williams Lake as Eliza Wilson scored the tying goal off a corner kick from Cartwright and Tanya Fearon scored the go-ahead marker on a breakaway. The local team protected the lead over the final 15 minutes in the 36-degree heat for a 2-1 victory.

The 麻豆社国产Y2K'Z (players were all born in 2000), coached by Don Burns, started the tournament with a 5-2 loss to the Chilliwack Attack but bounced back to defeat the Chilliwack Strikers 4-2. On Sunday, 麻豆社国产defeated the Chilliwack Crush 2-0 as goalie Callum McDonald recorded the shutout, and placed third by defeating Terrace 4-3. Jake Ellis scored three times for 麻豆社国产in the tournament. Stuart Loop, Apkar Virk, Aaron McCreanor and Thomas Burns also scored for the Y2K'Z.

The 麻豆社国产United U13 boys team, coached by Andrew Bauer, won its opener in dramatic fashion, playing host Chilliwack to a scoreless draw before going to a penalty-kick shootout. The teams were still deadlocked after nine shots, but 麻豆社国产goalie Nicky Klimchuk-Brown scored to break the tie in the shootout's 10th round.

United then lost 3-1 to the BCT Kings and 2-1 to Williams Lake. In the latter game, Matthew Misquitta scored the opening goal but 麻豆社国产could not hold the lead. United then finished the tournament strong, coming from behind to defeat Mission 4-2 after being behind 2-0 at halftime.

The regular season for Squamish's travel teams kicks off in September and runs through March.
