Squamish's U12 and U13 boys and girls travel soccer teams fared well at a preseason youth tournament in Chilliwack on the weekend.
The U13 Â鶹Éç¹ú²úStorm girls team finished second out of four teams in the two-day tournament, reaching the championship game before falling 2-0 to the Chilliwack Attack. The Storm, coached by Brent Williston, didn't score in two games against the Attack -the local also lost 2-0 to the same team to open the tournament.
After the opening-game loss, the Storm defeated the Golden Ears Rockets 2-1 on goals by Kei Gray and Cameron Larson, then shut out the Williams Lake Storm 3-0, with goals from Larson, Kyley Rosser and Jasleen Sekhon. Goalkeeper Madi Doyle recorded the shutout.
Squamish's newest travel teams, the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úUnited U12 girls team and the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úY2K'Z U12 boys team, both finished third in their respective six-team divisions.
United, coached by Marco Fanzone, beat Powell River 3-1 in the opener thanks to a pair of goals by Madison Cartwright and one by Lindsay Larson. The Â鶹Éç¹ú²úteam then ran up against a fresh Surrey United Revolution team. Playing its first game of the tournament, Surrey dominated play and won 2-0 despite a strong defensive effort from the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úgirls. One of the Surrey goals was disputed as some players said it went through the side netting.
Host Chilliwack defeated Â鶹Éç¹ú²ú5-0 in the Sunday morning matchup. In the game for third and fourth, Â鶹Éç¹ú²úUnited came from behind against Williams Lake as Eliza Wilson scored the tying goal off a corner kick from Cartwright and Tanya Fearon scored the go-ahead marker on a breakaway. The local team protected the lead over the final 15 minutes in the 36-degree heat for a 2-1 victory.
The Â鶹Éç¹ú²úY2K'Z (players were all born in 2000), coached by Don Burns, started the tournament with a 5-2 loss to the Chilliwack Attack but bounced back to defeat the Chilliwack Strikers 4-2. On Sunday, Â鶹Éç¹ú²údefeated the Chilliwack Crush 2-0 as goalie Callum McDonald recorded the shutout, and placed third by defeating Terrace 4-3. Jake Ellis scored three times for Â鶹Éç¹ú²úin the tournament. Stuart Loop, Apkar Virk, Aaron McCreanor and Thomas Burns also scored for the Y2K'Z.
The Â鶹Éç¹ú²úUnited U13 boys team, coached by Andrew Bauer, won its opener in dramatic fashion, playing host Chilliwack to a scoreless draw before going to a penalty-kick shootout. The teams were still deadlocked after nine shots, but Â鶹Éç¹ú²úgoalie Nicky Klimchuk-Brown scored to break the tie in the shootout's 10th round.
United then lost 3-1 to the BCT Kings and 2-1 to Williams Lake. In the latter game, Matthew Misquitta scored the opening goal but Â鶹Éç¹ú²úcould not hold the lead. United then finished the tournament strong, coming from behind to defeat Mission 4-2 after being behind 2-0 at halftime.
The regular season for Squamish's travel teams kicks off in September and runs through March.
