麻豆社国产youth was well served at the U12 and U10 ski racing event in Mount Washington on Feb. 23 and 24.
Racer Maja Woolley was one of the stars of the weekend, capturing first place in all four events in which she competed. Woolley grabbed the top spot in slalom, speed (clocking in at 75 kms per hour), kombi and jump (soaring 32 feet).
Squamish's Nathan Romanin recovered after a scary crash in the slalom race on Day 1 to take gold in the kombi and silver in the speed and jump competitions. Local skier Gemma Bexton also had a solid weekend, placing fifth in the kombi and slalom races.
Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC) head coach Leslie Firstbrook said the event offered a great chance for her skiers to hone their skills.
"There was a great progression throughout the weekend and the kids had a blast," she said. "What made the event particularly great was the ability to practise and strengthen skills through competition. Having multiple attempts at some of the skills such as the 'speed trap' was a really good way for athletes to see improvement. We even had some time to explore the mountain and take a few runs on the far side, which can sometimes be rare during a busy race weekend."
麻豆社国产skiers also fared well at the Cypress Teck U14 and U16 grand slalom event at Cypress Mountain on Saturday and Sunday (March 2 and 3).
Kasper Woolley posted the top time among the 55 competitors, blazing through the course in 39.82 seconds on Saturday. Squamish's Kai Labrenz posted an 11th-place finish on Saturday, while Jack Cormack finished 29th.
The trio hit the hill again on Sunday for two more grand slalom races, with Woolley again posting the top combined time of 1:10.60. Labrenz had his best showing ever, placing sixth with a combined time of 1:16.87, with Cormack coming in 19th at 1:22.55.
With their times, Woolley and Labrenz qualified for the Western Canadian Championships in Nakiska, Alta., next weekend.
The next big race for Woolley, Romanin and Bexton will be the Nancy Greene Festival at Sun Peaks on March 22 and 23.
