Tanya Fearon scored on a 12-yard shot with six minutes remaining and Eliza Wilson knocked in her own rebound with three minutes left as the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úUnited U-12 girls travel soccer team defeated the North Shore Anacondas 2-0 on Sunday (Nov. 13) at North Vancouver's Delbrook Park.
The victory, the team's sixth straight, helped United remain unbeaten during the regular season. Â鶹Éç¹ú²úUnited, coached by Marco Fanzone, is 7-0-1 in the Diadora Division of the eight-a-side league made up mostly of teams from the North Shore.
Â鶹Éç¹ú²údefeated the Anacondas 4-3 the first time the two met on Oct. 2. Since then, Â鶹Éç¹ú²úUnited has allowed just one goal in five games, all victories.
Playing without starting defender Lauren Petryshen, who was sidelined with an injury, the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úUnited defence kept the Anacondas off the scoreboard in a back-and-forth game in which both teams had several scoring chances. Defenders Jazmyn Williams, Mya Baxter, Linnea Burke, Madison Cartwright, Brianna Wolfe and Breanne DeCook played solidly along the back line. Wilson, Squamish's goalkeeper in the first half, turned aside the Anacondas' best scoring chance, standing her ground on a hard 15-yard shot that she fisted over the end line for a corner kick. She teamed with second-half goalie DeCook to record the shutout.
Overall, including tournaments, Â鶹Éç¹ú²úUnited is 12-4-1. Cartwright, who plays mostly in midfield, leads the team in scoring with 12 goals, followed by Fearon's eight.
Â鶹Éç¹ú²úUnited takes the pitch against the North Shore Grizzlies on Sunday (Nov. 20) at 12:30 p.m. at Brennan Park field No. 7.
