Squamish's Martin heats it up

Local skier posts three top-10 finishes at Panorama

Squamish's Mikayla Martin and the Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC) felt the heat both on and off the slopes at the Can-Am Western ski competition at Panorama from Feb. 28 to March 3.

The evening of Feb. 27 saw the team's condo go up in flames, but luckily no one was harmed. Martin and her mates shook off the fire and then brought the heat on the ski hills the next morning.

Martin posted times of 1:04.91 and 1:07.06 in the giant slalom on Feb. 28, good for fourth among all females in the U16 event. She followed that with times of 40.33 and 42.68 seconds, respectively, en route to another fourth-place finish in the ladies slalom on March 1.

She then finished the weekend of races off by grabbing a seventh-place finish in the Super G competition on March 2.

The team will compete in provincials at Red Mountain later this month and a sample of the team will head to Italy for the Topolino Trofeo youth races also later this month. Martin and her teammates will also looking forward to April, when Team Canada selections will be made for the Whistler Cup.
