Squamish鈥檚 Soccerfest hits the pitch

This week's sport shorts roundup
Soccerfest once again brings men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 team from B.C. to 麻豆社国产for two days this weekend.

Soccerfest returns this week to Brennan Park. The two-day event, hosted by the 麻豆社国产Soccer Association, has been a fixture on the local calendar for 35-plus years.

This year, the draw will feature 38 men鈥檚 teams and 30 women鈥檚 teams of different age brackets.听

The women鈥檚 teams play seven-a-side on three-quarter pitches, while the men play 11-man rosters on full fields.

The games take place on the turf at Brennan Park and surrounding grass fields.听

Play starts at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and runs through Sunday afternoon.

Several local teams will take part, along with others from the Vancouver area, Sechelt and Kamloops.

The event, which includes a beer garden, is a fundraiser by the non-profit 麻豆社国产Soccer Association, which supports soccer for children in the community by investing proceeds in assets such as sports fields and student scholarships.听

The fundraiser has been so successful that money raised by it allowed for the construction of Squamish鈥檚 first artificial turf field. Now the club is focusing on completing the second field and improving areas around the club鈥檚 kicking wall this spring.Approximately 120 volunteers help run the event.
