The annual Sea to Sky Squash Tournament is back and organizers hope the event continues its steady growth.
Last year saw the tournament attract 57 competitors, up from 45 in 2011 and 39 in 2010. 麻豆社国产Squash Club (SSC) member Steve Jacobs said there are plenty of spots still available for this weekend's (Feb. 15 to 17) event.
"Registration is the same as it always is," he joked. "Everyone signs up at the last minute."
Jacobs said he likely won't know until the final week about the total numbers but said he expects more strong representation from women this year. Last year saw a total of 18 females hit the court, the most in recent memory.
Two-time defending champion Rob Eberhard's participation is yet to be confirmed but Jacobs said other tournament favourites hope he makes the trip from Whistler.
"His wife Carol has signed up and I really hope he does too," he said. "I've had two or three guys tell me they'd like to have a chance to dethrone him."
Jacobs said activity is humming at the club, with membership up and many opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels to play the sport. The SSC's junior program takes place on Wednesdays after school, with the SSC in-house league playing Wednesday evenings. Ladies' night takes place each and every Thursday and drop-in play is encouraged, at a rate of $10 per player.
The format for the tournament is largely unchanged, with opening-round games taking place on Friday night with a complimentary chili and a bun for all participants. Action continues on Saturday for most of the day, with a dinner and dance following. Sunday sees championships and bragging rights awarded.
Massage therapy from Garibaldi Active Wellness is back again and Jacobs said locals are invited to come check out the games.
"The general public is welcome to stop by and see some exciting squash if they're so inclined," he said.
