Storm advances to provincials

Late goal lifts 麻豆社国产U15 girls soccer team to 2-1 triumph

The biggest win of the season is sending the 麻豆社国产Storm U15 girls team to the provincial cup tournament.

In a win-or-go home game, the Storm edged archrival North Shore Vipers 2-1 in 麻豆社国产on Sunday (March 9) to move on to the opening round of the Coastal B Cup tournament later this month.

The Storm got on the board at the 10-minute mark when Shannon Isnardy pounced on a free ball during a scramble after a nicely placed corner kick by Kyley Rosser. But the Vipers fought back and tied the game at the 21-minute mark when a long shot found its way past goalkeeper Chloe Moberg.

麻豆社国产continued to apply pressure in the first half, with Rosser hitting a crossbar at the 35-minute mark, but the game remained tied at one apiece after the first half.

The Storm controlled the play early in the second half and finally got on the board again when Rosser scored with seven minutes to play. The Vipers made a late push but Moberg stood her ground and kept the ball out of the back of the net to secure the win.

"I thought we battled hard and the young ladies deserved to win today," said head coach Brent Williston. "They've been playing hard all season and this is a great result for us."

Williston said it was nice to see how strong the Storm came out in the second half.

"I think there were still a bit of nerves going on in the first half," he said. "Once they settled down and got that out of their system, they seemed to create more chances and they realized they could control the game."

Williston praised the play of Rosser, Moberg and Chloe Williston and said it's been a good year for the team as they've won what he estimated to be 75 per cent of their games.

"It's nice for us to be representing this region," he said.

The first round of the Coastal B Cup tournament is set for the weekend of March 28 to 30. The Storm's opponent still has yet to be determined but Williston is looking forward to how the team fares on a bigger stage.
