Successful weekend for SSPA

Annual May long weekend tournament draws big numbers again

More than 40 teams and hundreds of players took to the ball diamonds at Brennan Park for the annual May long weekend slo-pitch tournament, organized by the 麻豆社国产Slo-Pitch Association (SSPA).

SSPA president Dave Southam said that while the weather didn't cooperate on Sunday (May 20) or Monday (May 21), the players seemed to enjoy themselves.

"Saturday (May 19) was a spectacular day and the rest was pretty wet, but that's Squamish," he said, noting that games had to be delayed on Monday.

Saturday was highlighted by the home run derby, with Greg Duceppe of the See-Ya team from Vancouver taking home the top prize in the contest, besting 31 others.

As for the tournament itself, local team the ExCons won the A division with a thrilling 11-10 victory in extra innings over the Outlaws. In the B division, another local team, the Tire Irons, took home the top prize after beating the Hammers. Chilliwack's Camel Toe beat out Squamish's Alta Lake Lightning in the C division, with the Slow Pokes beating the Tanks for the D division crown.

Next up for the SSPA will be the league wrap-up tournament on July 14 and 15. Southam also pointed that the SSPA will help put together the first-ever Andrew Pereman Memorial Tournament Aug. 18 and 19 at Hendrickson Fields. Pereman was an active local softball player who died earlier this year in a workplace accident. All proceeds from the event will go to a trust fund for Pereman's two young daughters.
