Summer lacrosse debut eyed

Sport's popularity growing after jamboree last June

The sport of lacrosse continues to build momentum in 麻豆社国产and a brand new local league could be coming to town as soon as this summer.

Building on the momentum of a successful jamboree event last June that drew close to 100 kids, Sonya Glover has taken the reins of the program and expects big things from the sport in the future.

"After the open house in June, I came aboard in October to head the project to get lacrosse going out here," she said. "It's pretty much building from scratch and my goal was to get one night designated for lacrosse locally, which is what Monday nights have become at Totem Hall."

Glover said Totem Hall is packed each Monday with youngsters crazy about the sport.

"We have kids who want to be here and it's been great as far as returning kids' and parents' involvement," she said, noting that she regularly gets 20 kids under the age of seven and 15 kids nine and 10 years old to the weekly event. "It's nice to see the parents wanting to be there to support their kids and getting some knowledge about the game."

March is going to be a busy month for Glover and local lacrosse players, with a fundraiser garage sale scheduled for March 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Totem Hall. All money raised from the event will go toward securing arena time and equipment for local lacrosse players. An information session on the sport is planned on March 19 at 1 p.m. at Brennan Park.

"This info session will hopefully help us find some volunteers," Glover said. "They're such a huge component of any sport and these meetings will help solidify our volunteers base and get it going."

The group is also offering a March break lacrosse camp to introduce new players to the sport and help enhance the skills of kids who have some knowledge. The four-day camp runs from March 20 to 23 at Brennan Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"The camp will be similar to what we do on Mondays to a certain extent," Glover said. "We're going to have special guests like Kevin Sandy from the British Columbia Lacrosse Association (BCLA) and the whole point is I want parents and kids to be exposed to the opportunities that lacrosse can offer. It can be an avenue to keep kids out of trouble, keep them fit and get them off the computer or TV and come to the rink and feel safe."

Glover said that ultimately she wants to generate enough interest to put together a local house league in the coming months.

"My hopes are for as soon as the ice comes out of the rink to have a house league," she said. "It's definitely doable with the amount of kids that we're getting on Mondays and families are keen to register. Hopefully we can get something going when the ice is out of Brennan Park at the end of April."
