A handful of local swimmers are off to the provincial meet after strong showings at the High School Speed Swimming Zone Championships on Oct. 28.
Athletes from Howe Sound Secondary School (HSSS) and Don Ross Secondary School (DRSS) took part in the event at the UBC Aquatic Centre.
Swimmers in grades 8 to 12 compete against each other in three different categories: open, B and C (new racers) divisions, a fact that makes the accomplishments of Grade 8 DRSS student Alexandra Jevons that much more impressive.
Jevons qualified in all four events she participated in, including a second-place finish in the 50-metre backstroke, a third-place showing in the 50 butterfly, fourth in the 100 individual medley and sixth in the 50 freestyle.
Other locals who qualified for Ppovincials were: HSSS Grade 11 student Sarah Dale (sixth in 50 freestyle), HSSS Grade 12 student Wyatt Pedersen (sixth in 50 freestyle) and DRSS Grade 8 student Autumn Cramb (fourth in 50 butterfly).
HSSS also placed third in the open category for the 200 mixed medley relay, which means the team of Teaghen Healey, Pedersen, Dale and Felix Muhler will head to the provincials.
Those who qualified will next head to Richmond for the provincial championships, taking place on Nov. 16 and 17.
Bowers, Martin shine at provincials
Local cross-country runners Sarah Bowers and Shondra Martin made the trek up north to Prince George and fared well at the B.C. High School cross-country provincial championships on Saturday (Nov. 3).
Competing against students from Grades 8 to 12, Bowers was the top local with a time of 20 minutes even. The grade 10 HSSS student placed 51st out of 251 total competitors. Martin, a Grade 9 student from DRSS, finished 142nd with a time of 21:42.
