Team Chawanda reaches A final

麻豆社国产women's dragon boat team posts strong showing at Alcan Festival

Squamish-based Team Chawanda enjoyed great success at this past weekend's 24th annual Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival in Vancouver.

The local women's team competed hard to reach the final of the Competitive A Women's Championship during Saturday's (June 16) event on rain-splattered False Creek, improving their overall standings by three divisions compared to last year's performance.

The team, representing the 麻豆社国产Dragon Boat Association (SDBA), posted its best time of two minutes, 27 seconds in the 500-metre final, placing eighth in a highly competitive field, which included teams that compete internationally.

"While they didn't bring home the hardware this time, they did bring their pride," the team said in a statement. "Coach Carl Mendoza was pleased with the results and commended the ladies on all of their hard work."

SDBA's next race is planned in mid-July in Harrison Hot Springs, and Mendoza would like to put together a mixed team of men and women. The athletes practice three or four times per week on Cattermole Slough. For more information visit Facebook/ 麻豆社国产Dragon Boating, or call (604) 815-3506.
