I迟鈥檚 been a while since Alberta鈥檚 Danielle Tkach captured the Lady Logger of the Day honour in Squamish, and her drought ended on Sunday (Aug. 2).
Tkach had strong showings at Sunday鈥檚 World Class and Saturday鈥檚 Novice and Intermediate Loggers Sports show to earn the crown.
Sunday saw Tkach win the open Jill and Jill hand bucking with partner Katherine Spencer and also the ladies鈥 single buck 鈥 by almost six seconds. She also won the ladies stock appearing powersaw race on Saturday and placed fourth competing against men in the novice underhand chop. She was named Lady Logger of the Weekend.
Tkach was humble after the win, pointing out a few events in which she should have fared better. 鈥淭he weekend went really well overall but there were a couple of events I thought I ought to have placed really well in, but I just really screwed up,鈥 she said, laughing. 鈥淭he axe throw I had pretty sweaty hands 鈥 that doesn鈥檛 work too well. I was happy with the Jill and Jill and single buck today.鈥
She said she comes to 麻豆社国产about every two years and began competing at 麻豆社国产Days in 2001. The atmosphere in 麻豆社国产is second to none, she said.
鈥淚迟鈥檚 one of a kind in terms of having a permanent facility that is dedicated to Loggers Sports,鈥 she said. 鈥淚迟鈥檚 a really great grounds and the crowds are fantastic. It makes it fun for us when the people are really into what we鈥檙e doing.鈥
Tkach continues on the Loggers Sports circuit in Campbell River this weekend, then Nanaimo and Port Alberni.
Mitch Hewitt of Scotch Creek, B.C. won his second straight Logger of the Day trophy and Open Logger of the Day after a strong day on the grounds. His top performance was in the spring board chop world championship, where he crushed the competition and beat the second-place competitor by 15 seconds. He also won obstacle pole bucking, the axe throw, was one third of the winning team at the standing butcher block and also placed second in speed bucking.
Oregon鈥檚 Brian Bartow also had a great Sunday, winning the climb, the tree topping and the chokerman鈥檚 race. The only other competitor to win more than one event was Karl Bischoff, who won the powersaw tree falling and the standing butcher block. Other winners included: Dennis Cahoon (speed bucking), Walt Page (single bucking), Dave Flannigan (standing butcher block), Cassidy Scheer (birling), Wayne Paulsen and Joe Whalen (double hand bucking) and Jesse Whitehead (underhand chop and Open Sportsman of the Day).
Squamish鈥檚 Jamey-Lyn Horth repeated as the ladies chokerman鈥檚 race champion and was the only competitor to clock less than 30 seconds. Katelan Steward from Chetwynd, B.C. placed second. She also earned novice/intermediate Sportsman of the Day. Squamish鈥檚 Rebecca Bolkowy and Marie Grindlay finished third and fourth respectively.
Allison Briscoe from Port McNeill took top spot in the ladies axe throw, edging out Bolkowy.
Saturday鈥檚 Novice and Intermediate show saw a wealth of young talent grab the spotlight, including several great showings from 麻豆社国产competitors.
Vancouver鈥檚 Lukas Brown-John won both the novice standing block chop and the intermediate underhand chop, with Vancouver鈥檚 Leo Coudrau earning top spot in both the intermediate double hand bucking and the novice underhand chop.
Squamish鈥檚 Wyatt Cardiff won the junior birling competition, beating out Squamish鈥檚 Jacob Neubauer in the final. Squamish鈥檚 Phil Cairns also had a strong day, winning the novice chokerman鈥檚 race and placing third in intermediate obstacle pole bucking. Squamish鈥檚 Jacqulin McNicol fared well in novice birling, finishing second.
Other winners on Saturday included: Scott Thompson (novice axe throw), Kenji Boyko (novice birling), Nick Van Brocklin (intermediate obstacle pole bucking, intermediate Logger of the Day), Jennifer St. Andrews (novice climb), Wayne Paulsen (intermediate springboard chop) and Allan Carson (novice stock appearing powersaw, novice Logger of the Day).
