United earns Whitecaps tickets

A season-long goal was achieved and a promise is set to be fulfilled by head coach Sean McCreanor and his staff.

McCreanor, who coaches the 麻豆社国产United FC U15 boys travel team, challenged his team to concede fewer than 20 goals this season 鈥 the reward being tickets for the entire team to a Vancouver Whitecaps games.

A few months later, United allowed an impressive 16 goals in 16 games and thanks to a $400 donation from the 麻豆社国产Breakfast Club they will now head to BC Place on March 7 to see the Whitecaps battle Toronto FC.

McCreanor said it was a challenge he was confident his team could take on.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a very confident group,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e started the season with a draw, a win and a loss and we proposed that challenge to them after that loss. We won our next six games and outscored the opposition 23-0. The second half of the season was a little up and down, but these guys worked hard all year and played great positional soccer to help us reach our goal.鈥

The team posted a record of 13 wins, three losses and two ties and managed to outscore its opponents 54-16 over the season. He said the work of assistant coach Will Wilson and team manager Lorelei Burns helped make his job much easier and ensure the team鈥檚 affairs ran smoothly.

麻豆社国产capped off the season with a 9-0 win over Burnaby鈥檚 SBM United in 麻豆社国产on Saturday, Feb. 21. McCreanor said a strong start to the game and the play of goalie Callum MacDonald helped lead the team to victory.

He said the players are pumped to attend the Whitecaps game, which is also the MLS club鈥檚 regular season home opener for the 2015 season.

The team finishes off the year with a four game tournament in West Vancouver starting on Saturday (Feb. 28).

In other local soccer news, Sikh Temple continued its strong play in the Howe Sound Men鈥檚 Soccer League (HSMSL) in 2015 and posted a 2-1 win over Whistler on Sunday, Feb. 22.

Temple got two goals from Navjeet in the win, with the Whistler goal scored by Dale Barker. Temple improves to a record of four wins, four losses and one tie with the victory and are in third. It was the first loss of the season for Whistler, who are in first place.

The day鈥檚 other game saw Galileo play the Ellis Moving Eagles to a 1-1 tie. Brandon George scored for Galileo, with Matt Rollinson scoring for the Eagles. Galileo is second in the HSMSL, while the Eagles sit in fourth place.

Action continues in the league, which is sponsored by North Shore Platinum Homes, on Sunday (March 1) with the Gunners playing Whistler and Temple battling Ellis.
