United finishes third in Pitt Meadows

U13 girls soccer team kicks off regular season this weekend

Tanya Fearon scored twice and Cerys Richards once as the 麻豆社国产United U13 girls travel soccer team clinched third place in its division at the West Coast Cup tournament with a 3-0 victory over the Langley Shock on Sunday (Sept. 2) in Pitt Meadows.

United, coached by Marco Fanzone, won two and lost two in the five-team U14 Division 3 portion of the long-weekend tournament. 麻豆社国产opened the tournament on Saturday (Sept. 1) by defeating the North Shore Strikers 3-0 thanks to goals by Paige Fanzone, Jazmyn Williams and Richards. Fanzone's goal came on a clever lob shot over the goalie's head from close range. Williams' goal came on a penalty kick after a Strikers' handball in the penalty box. Goalie Breanne DeCook posted the shutout.

麻豆社国产then fell 4-0 to a skilled Prince George Kodiaks team in Saturday's second game. On Sunday, United faced off against a disciplined team from Calgary, Roma FC, and lost 6-0. Roma won the tournament, scoring 29 goals and yielding just one in four games.

In Sunday's game against the U14 Shock, the speedy Fearon scored after breaking clear down the left wing in the 18th minute, then ran down a long pass from Ally Hughes-Goyette and scored again in the 50th minute. Richards poked in a rebound to close the scoring in the 55th minute. DeCook made a couple of stellar saves to secure the shutout.

Squamish's game most valuable players, as chosen by opposing coaches, were Jazmyn Williams, Linnea Burke, Julia Williams and Fearon. Midfielder Maya Heikoop was named Squamish's tournament MVP.

麻豆社国产United begins regular-season play in Division 2 of the B.C. Coastal Girls Soccer League on Sunday (Sept. 9) at 12:30 p.m. at Brennan Park.
