Squamish’s Linnea Uunila, a Grade 8 student at Don Ross Middle School and member of the Hollyburn Cross Country Ski Club, has competed in several cross-country skiing events recently, including the 2016 Teck BC Championships at Whistler Olympic Park March 4 to 6.Ìý
In the free technique sprints event, she placed third in the qualifier round and seventhÌýoverall, winning the B final for midget girls. In the classic technique, 5 km event, she placed fifth in her category.Ìý
At the BC Winter Games in Penticton from Feb. 26 to 28, she placed 11th in classic technique, 3.5 km event for midget girls; seventh at free technique, winning the B finals; and was on the fifth-place zone 5 team in the relay.Ìý
At the Spud Valley Loppet in Pemberton on Feb. 21, she was first in the women’s category and fourth overall in a field of 73 skiers in the 10 km classic technique. She won a trophy for the fastest female attending high school in the Sea to Sky School District.
Loop the Lakes coming
The trail-running season opens with Loop the Lakes, set for May 14 at Alice Lake.
The course will feature 8 km, 12 km and 21 km distances and also a 1 km kids race following the Loop the Lakes.
A Loop the Lakes four-week run clinic is being provided by Challenge by Choice to help runners prepare for the race season.Ìý

Cross-country results
Several members of the local Sea to Sky Nordic club posted strong results at the 2016 Teck BC Championships at Whistler Olympic Park from March 4 to 6.
In the peewee girls 1.5-K classic, Josie Clifford finished fourth. In the masters men’s 40-49 15-K, D’Arcy Bloom missed fourth spot by just over a second, while Ian Lowe was seventh.
The following day, several teams did well in the relay events: Sea to Sky 6 (Tyson Ike – two legs, Singjo Ng) was fourth in the peewee boys 3x1 free relay; Sea to Sky 4 (Josie Clifford, Ella Condon, Izabella Jost) took third, while Sea to Sky 5 (Bianca Ike – two legs, Zadie Waters) was fifth in the peewee girls 3x1 free relay; and Sea to Sky 3 (Yvette Jackson, Marie St.-Pierre, Cathy Martin) was third in the open women’s 3x5 free relay.Ìý
Guns & Hoses game
The annual Guns & Hoses Charity Hockey Game between the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úFire Rescue team and Â鶹Éç¹ú²úRCMP takes place on Friday, March 18 at 6 p.m. at Brennan Park Arena. The puck drops at 6:30 p.m.
This non-profit event raises funds for a member, family or organization in our community facing a significant illness or life-altering circumstance. All proceeds are given to the chosen designate. Past recipients have been people challenged with nerve disorders, cancer, skin ailments and other illnesses.
This year the recipient is Kyle Taylor, an energetic three-year-old diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer four months ago. He endured chemotherapy and recently had surgery to remove the tumour. He will undergo more chemotherapy and then radiation. The current treatment plan is 18 to 22 months.Ìý
The game will raise funds so his parents can stay at his side and not worry about financial burden, organizers said.

Hockey finals
Hockey season is winding down for local teams. The Â鶹Éç¹ú²úatom rep team beat Richmond 9-1 on Sunday and went 5-0 in the President’s Series for flight three teams.
The Â鶹Éç¹ú²úbantam house C1 team took the Lions Gate League Sea to Sky championship against Whistler, also on Sunday.
The peewee house C1 Team won the Lions Gate League Sea to Sky Peewee C Playoff Championship against North Vancouver with a 6-2 victory, while the peewee rep team knocked off BWC A3, a higher flight team, in President’s Series action. The team was slated for a series banner game Tuesday versus Abbotsford before heading off to a Richmond tournament to end the season.Ìý
This year, the team has been the highest-scoring team among all peewee rep teams in the PCAHA.Ìý

As well, the combined Whistler-Â鶹Éç¹ú²úmidget rep team is heading to the provincials on the Sunshine Coast starting this weekend.
