Uunila: Squamish's IronKid

Local triathlete posting strong results

It's been a busy summer of swimming, biking and running for young local triathlete Linnea Uunila.

The 10-year-old's most recent outing saw her travel to Boulder, Colo., to take part in the IronKids National Triathlon Race on Aug. 3.

Uunila was the only Canadian at the event and placed third out of a field of 28 competitors in her age group. She swam 150 yards, biked four miles and ran one mile at an elevation of 5,400 feet.

With the strong showing, Uunila qualified for the IronKids U.S. Championship race in Des Moines, Iowa, on Aug. 31. It's still to be determined whether the Uunila family will make the trip to the Hawkeye State but she plans to compete in the Apple Triathlon in Kelowna on Saturday (Aug. 17) and the Summerland Triathlon on Sept. 1.

Uunila has competed in a total of eight triathlons this summer, including a third-place finish in her age group at the 麻豆社国产Youth Triathlon in May. She also competed at the annual Across the Lake Swim in Kelowna in July, where she completed the 2.1-kilometre swim in 42:28 and finished 248th out of 659 competitors of all ages.
