Whistler trails open early

Warmer weather leads hiking trails opening two weeks earlier than in '12

麻豆社国产residents looking to explore the trails in Whistler on Saturday (July 20) awoke to a nice surprise - Whistler Blackcomb's hiking and running routes opened two weeks early.

It's all due to warm alpine temperatures and sunny weather through most of July. Some trails had been open since mid-June but Saturday saw the first time all of Whistler and Blackcomb's trails were fully open.

"We are actually two weeks ahead of schedule compared to last year," Arthur DeJong, Mountain Planning and Environmental Resource Manager for Whistler Blackcomb said in a statement. "Warm weather this past spring, and so far this summer, has quickened the snow melt process in the alpine, resulting in early trail openings and a longer alpine hiking season. We are even seeing alpine flowers starting to bloom already, which is much earlier than we saw last year."

Whistler Blackcomb boasts more than 50 kilometres of hiking and running routes and is recognized as some of the most easily accessible and vast terrain on the continent. Some of the more popular routes include Alpine Vista, Top of the World, Running the Rooftop, Alpine Lakes Loop and Overlord Vista.

Weekend warriors can also check out the Roundhouse Lodge on Whistler Mountain for a barbecue every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Another upcoming event is the Winemaker Dinner at Steeps Grill and Wine Bar occurring on Aug. 2. Steeps is located on Whistler Mountain.
