Whitewater team trials arriving in Squamish

Qualifiers to represent Canada in Singapore

The 麻豆社国产Paddling Club will be hosting the Canadian national junior whitewater slalom team trials in partnership with the Chilliwack Centre of Excellence on the lower Mamquam River Saturday May 15 and Sunday May 16.

The country's best junior whitewater athletes will start arriving in 麻豆社国产for training on Saturday (May 8).

Athletes can be seen training from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily at the river. To reach the training site spectators must drive about 3.5 kilometres down the Mamquam Forest Service Road and take the first two left forks in the road before parking at the gate and walking to the river.

The weekend competition consists of four races, two on each day. Paddlers will have to navigate through a 300-metre whitewater course without touching a gate. The race events include single kayak (K) events, single (C1) and double canoe (C2) events.

The competition on Saturday will include two runs down the same course, while Sunday's competition will include two different courses.

The team trials will determine which athletes can compete in the 2010 Junior World Championships in Foix, France, at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games Team in Singapore. Qualifiers will receive national team coaching as well as other services provided by CanoeKayak Canada-Whitewater and Sport Canada.

Organizers have also partnered with Run of River Power Inc., a British Columbia-based developer of sustainable, renewable energy for the event.

"This is a great opportunity to demonstrate how our sport can partner with the power industry in a constructive and positive manner," said World champion and five time Olympian David Ford.

Ford will defend his position at the Canadian national senior whitewater slalom team trials at Rutherford Creek Whitewater Park near Pemberton on Saturday May 22 and Sunday May 23.
