Winterhawks clip Eagles

NSWC Atom Rep team beats Â鶹Éç¹ú²ú8-1 on Halloween

It wasn't exactly a great way for the Atom Rep Â鶹Éç¹ú²úEagles to start off their Halloween.

The team probably felt more tricked than treated as they dropped an 8-1 contest to the North Shore Winter Club Winterhawks (NSWC). The team is still competing in the tiering stage, with the regular season still to come and Eagles head coach Chris Nunn said he is willing to be patient with his young team.

"A lot of our players have never played rep before so it's a learning process for them," he said. "We're working hard out there but it's going to take some time for the team to adjust."

The goals came fast and furious for the Winterhawks, who were coached by former Vancouver Canuck Garry Valk, as they built a 3-0 lead after one period of play. It was a rough start to the game for the Eagles but goaltender John Hunter did his best to keep the score relatively close after the opening period.

The Eagles seemed to get more comfortable as the game continued but the Winterhawks kept lighting the lamp, scoring two more goals before Â鶹Éç¹ú²úreplaced Hunter with Dexter Butterworth. Squamish's Mickey Williston had a glorious breakaway opportunity but was stymied by the NSWC's goalie, who played a strong game in between the pipes. The second period ended with the Winterhawks holding a 6-0 lead.

Â鶹Éç¹ú²úcontinued to improve as the game went on and Cameron Stewart had a chance to get the Eagles on the board after being hauled down on a breakaway. On the ensuing penalty shot, Stewart beat the goalie but couldn't beat the iron and Â鶹Éç¹ú²úremained goal-less. NSWC added another goal to go up 7-0 but Â鶹Éç¹ú²úgot on the board when Jake Ellis fooled the Winterhawks keeper after a nice set-up by Rafi Abolfathi and made the score 7-1. NSWC added a late goal for a final score of 8-1.

The tiering will continue for the next few weeks for the Atom Rep Eagles, who will have a regular home game at Brennan Park Arena every Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

In other Â鶹Éç¹ú²úMinor Hockey Association news, William Rickert's lucky name was drawn and he has won the opportunity to skate with the Vancouver Giants during their first period warm-up at the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úMinor Hockey Association's (SMHA) fundraiser game on Nov. 30. Rickert and his teammates will also get the chance to play a short game on the Pacific Coliseum ice during the first intermission of the game, which will see the Giants take on Â鶹Éç¹ú²úraised Dalton Thrower and the Saskatoon Blades. Tickets are still available for the fundraiser and those interested can contact event organizer Lisa McIntosh at 604-898-0706.
