Wizards capture HSMFL title

Local team continues hot August with league championship

The 麻豆社国产Wizards captured the 2011 Howe Sound Men's Fastball League (HSMFL) championship after sweeping the Lagers in the final on Wednesday (Aug. 17).

It was a perfect end to what has been a flawless season for the team in the HSMFL. The team went undefeated in the regular season and continued its dominance in the playoffs.

Game one of the series saw the Lagers and the Wizards locked in a pitching duel. Travis Moyle of the Wizards and Jason Wright of the Lagers played a game of one-upmanship as they each pitched five scoreless innings to open the game.

However, Moyle helped his own cause in the bottom of the six as he drove in his teammate Jeremy Galley to score the game's one and only run. The Lagers didn't have an answer for Moyle on the mound and Wright shut down the Wizards for the rest of the game. The Wizards took the game 1-0 to move one win away from taking home the championship.

Game two continued on the same trend, with Moyle and Wright both shutting down the opposition. The game was busted wide open in the top of the fourth inning when Moyle again helped his own cause by blasting a home run. The rally continued with the Wizards putting several men on base, and Stephen Fryer drove in the second run of the inning for the team to put the Wiz up 2-0.

The Wizards seemed to finally figure Wright out, as the very next inning Craig Halliday hustled his way to an inside-the-park home run and the team added another run in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead.

Wright continued his stellar play on the mound and managed to shut out the Lagers for the second straight game to lead the Wizards to the HSMFL championship by a final score of 4-0.

It's been a good month for the team, as they added the HSMFL championship to the Loggers Sports Tourney win earlier this month. The Wizards managed to breeze through the entire Loggers Sports Tournament without a single loss.

The two big wins are also positive steps forward for the team after a disappointing end to their season in the Lower Mainland Fastball League (LMFL). Plagued by poor weather and several cancellations, the Wizards only played 12 games in the LMFL regular season and then were prematurely bounced in the second round of the playoffs after less than nine players showed up and the team was forced to forfeit.
