It's hard to say who suffered more of a beating on Saturday (Oct. 23), the 麻豆社国产Wolfpack or the Ultimate Fighting Championship's Brock Lesnar.
Lesnar might have ended up black and blue after losing his fight but the Wolfpack were also abused on home ice by the Delta Ice Hawks, losing 6-1.
It concluded another fruitless weekend for the team, who also lost a close 3-2 contest to the Grandview Steelers in Whistler on Friday (Oct. 22).
"I think Delta is just much more talented than us," said Wolfpack head coach Matt Samson. "We looked pretty tired out there tonight and it was a bad start for our goalie and some bad pinches by our defence."
The Ice Hawks opened the scoring just over five minutes into the contest and never looked back, adding three more unanswered goals over the first two periods. It was a rough start for newly acquired Wolfpack goalie Harry Fredeman. The keeper, who was making his first start for 麻豆社国产since being acquired by the team on Oct. 15 from Mission, allowed three goals on his first ten shots and was yanked from the crease after the first period.
Jordan Liem was solid in relief, stopping 29 of 32 shots but the game was no longer in doubt when he entered the crease. Konrad Sander scored Squamish's only goal of the game on a rebound to get the Wolfpack on the board but Delta added two more to finish the game off at 6-1.
The loss continues the Wolfpack's poor play at home, which baffles Samson.
"We seem to always lay an egg at home," he said. "But we need to try to move forward and look ahead."
On Friday (Oct. 22), the team put forth a much better effort but came up short against the Grandview Steelers, losing 3-2. The game, which took place at the Meadow Park Sports Arena in Whistler, saw the Wolfpack hold 1-0 and 2-1 leads but fail to maintain them.
Cole Briggs had a strong night for the Wolfpack, opening the scoring in the first period off of a feed by Dean Wilson and the goal stood until 12:59 of the second when Grandview tied the game up. The second period saw 麻豆社国产find themselves stuck in the penalty box on four separate occasions, managing to kill them all off but finding themselves tied with the Steelers after two. Liem was sensational in goal in the second, stopping 23 of the 24 shots he faced in the middle frame.
Briggs replied again in the third to put the Wolfpack up 2-1 but they couldn't hang on to the lead. The Steelers finally converted on the power play at 10:13 and then scored the go ahead goal seven minutes later. It ultimately stood and the Steelers skated out of Whistler with two points.
The pair of losses solidifies the Wolfpack in the basement of the Tom Shaw Conference, with a record of three wins, nine losses and two overtime losses. After this weekend, they now trail the fourth place Steelers for the fourth and final playoff spot by 11 points.
The team will get another crack at the Steelers when they come to 麻豆社国产on Saturday (Oct. 30). Face-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. and will take place at the Brennan Park Arena.
