Woolley snags pair of medals

麻豆社国产U14 skier excels at Whistler Cup; Martin posts sixth-, seventh-place finishes

Squamish's Kasper Woolley came home with some serious hardware at the annual Whistler Cup downhill ski event last weekend.

Woolley won a gold at the kinder kombi race with a time of 41.88 seconds on Friday (April 5) and, after being unable to finish the slalom on Saturday (April 6), he bounced back with a second-place finish in the giant slalom on Sunday (April 7).

The event drew 120 competitors in the U14 category from all over the world and Woolley was tied for top Canadian with Whistler's Finn Iles, who edged out Woolley for the Dave Murray award due to a higher number of race points.

麻豆社国产racers Kai Labrenz and Jack Cormack also competed in the races with Labrenz picking up a 58th-place finish on Friday and a 34th-place finish on Saturday. Cormack placed 82nd on Friday, 53rd on Saturday and 87th on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in the U16 Whistler Cup races, Squamish's Mikayla Martin picked up a seventh-place finish in the super G race on Friday and followed that with a sixth-place finish in the slalom on Sunday. Martin and her teammates helped win the U16 Rio Tinto Alcan Whistler Cup for Team Canada with their strong times in the men's and women's races.

The Whistler Cup is one of two big international races each year for skiers in the 13-to-15 age group, the other being the Topolino Trofeo in Italy. Many past Whistler Cup participants have gone on to success on the World Cup circuit and at the Olympics.
