Woolley, Sones excel at B.C. Winter Games

麻豆社国产athletes grab three medals apiece in Vernon

Two 麻豆社国产athletes each took home a trio of medals at the 2012 B.C. Winter Games in Vernon this past weekend.

Alpine skier Kasper Woolley picked up gold medals in both the slalom and giant slalom and added a silver in the ski cross. Biathlete Hunter Sones grabbed three bronze medals in the individual, sprint and super sprint boys races.

"The best part of the B.C. Winter Games was the racing," Woolley said. "It was very well put on. It was really cool when they played the national anthem at the awards."

In addition to the medals, Sones was presented with the W.R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence during the closing ceremonies of the games.

The award was named in honour of the former Premier of B.C., William Bennett, who was instrumental in starting the B.C. Summer and B.C. Winter Games program in 1978. The award includes a $2,500 bursary to use toward future sport expenses or post-secondary education.

"Hunter had a great time at the games, raced hard, made friends and memories that will last a lifetime," said his mother Rosanne Sones. "Having been bestowed the honour of receiving the W.R. Bennett Athletic Excellence Award he feels an even greater desire to promote the sport of biathlon."

Sones will next compete at the Biathlon B.C. Championships at Whistler Olympic Park this weekend.

Other 麻豆社国产athletes who competed at the event included Erik Heilig, who finished fourth in the 400-metre midget boys individual cross-country sprint and 12th in the midget boys 3.5-kilometre cross country race, and Kai Labrenz, who placed 23rd in the giant slalom and 34th in ski cross.
