WOP going back to school

Â鶹Éç¹ú²ústudents getting a chance to learn on the trails

Â鶹Éç¹ú²ústudents will soon get a chance to learn on the trails as opposed to the classroom with the Whistler Olympic Park (WOP) school program.

Students in Grades 3 through 12 will get to attend WOP starting this month and get a chance to experience the sport of cross-country skiing on WOP's trails.

"With our school program we want to introduce kids to the sport of Nordic skiing," said WOP director Lindsay Durno. "We hope that many students and their families will make this healthy and family-oriented activity one of their regular recreational pursuits."

Groups of 40 to 50 students come to WOP for up to four sessions during the season. Participating schools include Cedar Valley Waldorf, Brackendale Elementary, Garibaldi Highlands Elementary, Â鶹Éç¹ú²úElementary and Valleycliffe Elementary.

Experienced instructors teach the students how to move comfortably and safely on skis, using games and activities to help develop balance, coordination and agility - attributes key to becoming a strong cross-country skier.

To help make the sport more accessible for the community, WOP and Cross Country British Columbia (CCBC) have teamed up to significantly discount the cost of taking part in the school program. Subsidies provided by CCBC, along with discounted rentals, tickets and instruction provided by WOP will help to allow Â鶹Éç¹ú²ústudents the chance to hit the trails.
