Whistler Olympic Park (WOP) has been named national training centre for ski jumping and Nordic combined, having wrested that distinction from Calgary.
The move was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday (Jan. 21). Curtis Lyon, chairman and high performance director of Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Canada, lauded the facilities in the Callaghan Valley as "the perfect place for our athletes to hone their skills and challenge the best.
"We see the venue as an integral part of the sport in this country and one of the keys to our success."
The move follows the announcement in December that the Whistler Sliding Centre would become the training facility for Canada's national bobsleigh, skeleton and luge teams, leaving Calgary's Canada Olympic Park - which hosted the 1988 Winter Olympic sliding, ski jumping and Nordic combined competitions -behind.
The ski jumping venue at WOP is known to for its stable wind conditions and a hill profile that's similar to the jumps in Sochi, Russia, host city for the 2014 Games. For that reason, Canada's national ski jumping team was to visit WOP this week (Jan. 27 to Feb. 1) for its final training camp before heading to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
