NEW YORK (AP) 鈥 Oscar winner Viola Davis is working on a memoir that she says will be 鈥渟traight, no chaser.鈥

HarperOne will release Davis' 鈥淔inding Me鈥 on April 19, 2022. Davis traces her rise from growing up in poverty and family violence in Rhode Island to becoming one of the world's most acclaimed actors. 鈥淚 believe that our stories, and the courage to share them, is the most powerful empathetic tool we have,鈥 she said in a statement. 鈥淭his is my story ... straight no chaser.鈥

Davis' other credits include the films 鈥淭he Help,鈥 last year's 鈥淢a Rainey's Black Bottom鈥 and the upcoming 鈥淭he Suicide Squad.鈥 She is also planning to portray Michelle Obama for the Showtime series 鈥淔irst Ladies," which she will help produce.

鈥淰iola Davis is a powerful truth teller 鈥 through her work on stage and screen, as well as in her life,鈥 HarperOne president and publisher Judith Curr said in a statement. 鈥淚鈥檓 looking forward to working with her on a book that powerfully reveals the risk and danger for a Black woman living in the fullness of her talents and gifts 鈥 and the reward and freedom that comes with it.鈥
