Letter: Keep focus on fighting racism, Squamish

I will never have to advocate for basic human rights that Black Lives Matter and others have to because those rights are simply given to me because I am white.

Regarding recent letters about U.S. events at the Capitol and the anti-racism movement: violence to Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) communities happens Every. Single. Day, in every area of life. As a white person, I will never be refused excellent health care, education, and financing. I will never have to deal with the fear of being pulled over or being tokenized in the workplace.

I will never have to advocate for basic human rights that Black Lives Matter and others have to because those rights are simply given to me because I am white.

White supremacy has a history of taking the focus off the real issues — equity, justice, access — to the less important: vandalism, insurance, and lost revenue. White supremacy ignores the 500+ years of oppression inflicted on radicalized peoples that has us white people care more about a broken window than a human being.

I don't condone vandalism. More so, I don't condone dangerous liberal, progressive, left or whatever title one identities with, that continues to keep Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour from the basic human right to dignity, respect, equity, safety and opportunity.

As a white person, I will never know the lived experiences of BIPOCS. And, it's my and every white person's responsibility to unlearn, educate, and be a contributor to the dismantling of racism in our world. It's uncomfortable and we are capable of prioritizing bigger things over our comfort.

Instead of debating what's happening in the U.S., let's do our work in so-called Canada. After all, you are reading this letter on stolen land where Indigenous peoples are still fighting for clean water, let alone the sovereignty they duly deserve.
